Career Counseling

My Career Counseling sessions usually start with a discussion of three questions:

If you understand the first two issues for a specific role or industry, how to approach the third issue is much easier.

Some of you will recognize that this process parallels a marketing plan. You need to know who in the market is most likely to buy your product and you need to know what makes the customer decide to buy. Then you must frame your pitch so it is more compelling to that audience than the pitch of your competitor.

The objective is to place your resume on the top of the Hiring Manager’s pile, not to have it lost in the middle of the pile. The same strategies are equally important to your cover-letter, networking encounters, and the interview process.

I will teach you the strategies

I will teach you the strategies that affect all stages of the search and presentation process.

  1. We almost always begin the counseling process by having you collect case histories and evidence demonstrating your impact on past companies.
  2. Then we talk about the implications of what you offer and what the pitch should emphasize to obtain your goals.
  3. If you are looking to explore to a new industry, we talk about whether the strategies should change for the new objective. We discuss how the positioning applies to the resume, cover letter, networking and the interview.

You will be much more comfortable revising your own resume and interviewing by the end of this process because you will know exactly what needs to be said. But I am available to help you write the resume if you wish.
